When you free-associate about the word "magic," what comes to
mind? How about words like miracle, impossible,
out-of-this-world, and fantasy? Magic is magical because it sits
far outside the boundaries of our ordinary average lives. In the
minds of most people, magic belongs either to the great sages of
the misty past or to the fantasy book world of Harry Potter. In
other words, for most people magic almost doesn't exist in our
here-and-now reality.
But let's take a closer look from a different angle. Why would
anyone want to do magic? Do we want to do magic just so we can
have some fun moving clouds around the sky? Do we want to attract
the perfect soul-mate, achieve perfect health, or scale the
corporate career ladder until we reach the very top? What is it
that we think magic will give us that ordinary life can't?
For most people magic is a doorway to the unattainable-a way to
get something that we feel we otherwise can never have. After
all, you never feel further away from getting something then when
you don't yet have it. So magic makes possible what we feel is
impossible. And therein lays one of the great secrets of magic.
Magic does exist and it is real. But for magic to work for you,
you have to shift into a different way of looking at the world.
We long for magic when we are certain that we can't get what we
want through ordinary means like hard work and persistence-when
we are certain that there is no solution.
And magic can provide that solution-with one giant condition.
Magic works only when we believe, no, when we are certain, that a
solution exists. We don't have to know the solution; we just have
to believe that it exists. That certainty, that bone-deep knowing
that anything is possible, is the starting place of magic.
All the spells, rituals, litanies, and prayers in the world will
produce no magic for you unless you can find the openness of mind
to acknowledge that anything is possible. If you can believe that
then the world of magic is open to you. Not sure you can? Not
sure you believe? Then try this: as an experiment, act as if you
believe that everything is possible; make choices as if you
believe that anything is possible. Then see what happens.
Magic will take you by surprise!
