This exercise was brought to the Shaolin Temple back in the 6 century C.E. and is still practiced today. This routine has a number of wonderful benefits from Qi or Chi generation to physical strength, to enhanced circulation. I would highly recommend everyone at least trying to do this everyday for a month straight; you can most likely do this full routine in 15-20 minutes. Qigong healers say it takes at-least 100 days of doing this type or routine until you can feel the healing effects, but after 30 days you will feel your body have increased Chi Flow, after 1 month this routine will become a habit and you will be on your way to raising your own chi for personal or other healing uses.
1. Holding the heavens
- stand with feet parallel, shoulder width apart, knees shoulder width apart, and palms facing your body
- Inhale deeply raises your arms in a circular movement, when your arms are vertical interlock your finders and keep palms facing your head. Exhale
- Inhale, rotate your palms to face the sky, lift heals off of the ground and stretch, hold for 2 seconds.
- exhale and return to start position
- do this 10 times total
2. Drawing the bow
- stand in horse stance
- cross your arms on your chest,(x position) right over left, left palm touching, chest point index finder of right hand, make a fist with your left hand
- extend your right arm to right side of your body; follow your hand with your eyes as you do so
- At the same time draw your left elbow back
- Breath in as drawing the bow, exhale when releasing the arrow
- Step out of horse stance to standing position, left foot meets right foot
- repeat on other side of the body
- Do this 5-10 times per side.
3. Separating heaven and earth
- stand with your feet shoulder width apart, facing out (your feet should be in a V position)
- Place hands together in front of your chest, vertically, left arm over head, palm facing up
- inhale deeply, imagine inhaling healing energy, raise left arm over head, palm facing up, lower right arm , down b side palm facing the earth, (arms should read 6:00, like on a clock face)
- exhale, be sure arms are extended fully and your feel the stretch
- inhale lower left arm and raise your right arm
- 5 to 10 times each side
4. Looking Backwards
- stand up straight, hands touching your sides
-look straight ahead, breath in
- While exhaling slowly turn your head clockwise as far as possible
- return to start position, breath in
- step 3 except other side of body
-10 times each side
5. Looking For Treasure
- stand in horse stance
- Bend at the waist until upper body is parallel with the ground
- raise body up toward the right in a twist movement
- go back to starting position, then repeat step 3 except on left side of the body
- 5-10 times each side
6. Touching the earth
- stand upright, arms at your side
- Breath in deeply, raise your arms over your head, and bend back wards slightly
- Exhale brings your arms in front of you; bend at the waist forward until your arms touch the floor
5-10 times total
7. Reaching out to Nature
- stand in horse stance
- make fist, raise arms above your waist, and hold at hips elbows back
- stretch your left fist in front of your body, palm facing down (arm should be fully extended in front of you
- inhale as you exhale pull left arm back and move your right arm forward
- This looks like a punching drill in martial arts, except it is done at a slow movement
5-10 times each side
8. Generate Waves of Energy
- Stand with your feet should with apart, arms at your sides
- look forward and clear your mind, slowly raise your heals off of he floor, once you are on your tiptoes slowly lower your heals back to the floor
- 5-10 times
Ba Duan Jin Closing exercise
- sit comfort with a straight back
- clench hands into loose fists
- Gently tap your all over your body, start with arms, and move to chest and back then down your legs.
These steps are variations of the original exercises. I will list the next towards the end of the section. Also if you have issues with standing you can do all these movements in a chair.
Qigong Meditations
Counting Meditation
- lay on your back
- 4 count breath in, 4 count breath = on cycle
- Start with 25 cycles then progress to 50,75,100
- On your breath in and out I like to breath in with the concept of knowledge and breath out ignorance. If you decide to use concepts instead of counting in and out to a count of 4 I recommend that your concepts are about he same length to keep your breathing stead.
Abdominal Breathing
- sit cross legged with your back straight
- hold your left palm over your abs, and your right palm over your left
- follow your breath
- see and feel the heavenly chi/ living force enter your body and cycle through, and watch the negative energy leave your body (Focus on feeling the energy in your abs circulating throughout your body)
- this can be done in a sitting, standing or laying position
3rd Eye Meditation
- sit in Lotus, Half Lotus or on your knees
- sit with your back straight and your hands resting on your knees
- bring attention to in-between your eye brows
- focus thoughts on specific event and keep focus
- with practice you may feel a warming sensation in the 3rd eye area
- I personally use this meditation before practice, belt test and competitions the most and sometimes in the start of the day. It helps me to see the things I would like them to be and helps to enforce the power of positive thinking
Affirmations
- sit in cross leg position
- close eyes and relax the body
- focus on 3rd eye are, steady breath and clear your mind
- repeat affirmation quietly to yourself 5 times
- repeat affirmation in your mind 5 times
- see yourself actually achieving the event in your mind

For a visual I personally use the Anakin becoming a Jedi knight as seen in the clone wars cartoon. I try to imagine how e felt when the council lit their light sabers arround him, and Yoda officially Knighted him into the order. I am a Healer, shining with healing chi!
I see myself as bright energy in a dark room with chi entering my 3rd eye, flowing through the 3 Dan Tians and then out of my palms to those arround me.
3 Dan Tians Meditation
Dan = essence of energy, Tians = area for essence of energy
- see and feel heavenly chi enter through your upper Dan Tians (3rd eye)
- feel it filter through middle Dan Tain (solar plexes)

Sensing Qi From within
1. Standing in a natural stance
- Stand with your feet a shoulder-width apart and your
knees slightly bent
- Release tensions from your body as you sway your body

- Focus your attention to your five senses and experience
yourself in the nature
2. Qi Sensations in Hands
- Hold your hands together for a while
- Slowly move your hands - further and closer(Practice
until you can sense Qi with your hands a shoulder-width
apart (We`ll use this in Step 6))
- Create a ball by moving your hands like kneading
- The sizes of balls are about a golf ball, a baseball and a
basketball
3 Qi Sensations in Fingers
- Use your index and middle finger to touch other hand*s
palm. Separate slightly and feel Qi.
- as your fingers slightly separate from your palm, move
your sword fingers - right and left and circle, and feel the
movements of Qi.
- Same as above Practice your thumb and index finger and
all five fingers.
- Please practice until you learn how to use these three
fingers and sense the movement of Qi
4.Sensations of Qi in different body parts
- Sensing Qi inside and outside of your arms as you
separate the arms a few centimeters apart.
- From your chest to your belly
- From your belly to your buttocks
- The outside and inside of your legs.
- Your face and both eyes
- the sides of your head and ears
- Practice until you can sense the different sensations of
Qi from certain body parts experiencing exhaustion or
pain and other body parts that are normal.
5. Seeing (sensing) Qi
- Rub both of your hands until they become slightly warm
- Separate the hands slowly
- See the tips of your fingers and hands with an
unfocused gaze
- Seeing other`s Qi
- When you become able to see your own Qi, let`s
practice seeing other`s Qi around their fingers and
hands. Once you accomplish this, ask a person to sit by a
wall and practice seeing his or her body`s Qi. A key is to
see this person`s Qi with an unfocused gaze.
External Qigong Practices

- Put your hand above a partner's hand
- Put the palm of your right hand above your partner's left hand
- Feel Qi-sensations by moving your hand closer and away

- Point at your partner's palm with Kenshi ("Sword Fingers"; both index and middle

When you begin to feel Qi-sensations, you will be able to sense movements even with your eyes closed.

- Outside and inside of the partner's arms
