Most kids love slime. I know that I did when I was younger and still do. Green slime had so many uses in cartoons and tv shows... Slimer's drippings, the Turtle's Ooze, Nickelodeon, etc.
After the second Ghostbusters movie came out, one of the ice cream shops (I believe it was Dairy Queen) offered a "Slimer Ice Cream" that was basically a green ice cream that was drenched in slime. A while back I started trying to look for the recipe for it, but there's nothing online. Most of the recipes for slime involve corn starch, which I really didn't want to put onto my ice cream... ick. Well, a few weeks back I had a dream, or put myself into the body of my younger self, something, and I realized what the slime was. So, I went to the store and bought the needed ingredients to start working on the right combination. The ingredients are simple to get and I know that my kids went to town eating it while saying, "Eew nasty!" and then getting another big bite.
Ingredients and Directions
1/2 cup Butterscotch topping
6 drops green food coloring
2 drops yellow food coloring
A few drops of additional flavoring of your choice - peppermint, cinnamon, etc.
Put them into a cup and stir until it's well blended.

I agree that this is probably what Slimer, the Turtles, and various other shows used for slime. I always thought that "You Can't Do That On Television" used applesauce because it was so thin and runny. Maybe not though. At any rate, I am picking this stuff up today to see if we can slime some ice cream around here.

YCDTOTV uses a secret mixture. I saw the guy on tv once showing how they make it and the final ingredient was a white powder, but he wouldn't say what it was. Basically though, theirs was glue, water, food coloring, borax, and the white ingredient. My best guess is that it's some sort of detergent to help stop the color from setting into the clothes.
Whatever it is, they still use it on a daily basis at the theme park.
