ST. PETERSBURG — A St. Petersburg Fire Rescue paramedic truck accidentally ran over the person they were sent to help on Thursday afternoon, according to police.
The victim, who was not identified, was taken to Bayfront Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
The accident took place around 3:44 p.m. outside Master Fire Station 1 at 400 Dr. Martin Luther King St. S, according to the St. Petersburg Police Department.
Firefighters there were dispatched to treat a "bleeding person" who several callers said was located right nearby.
So the firefighters got into Fire Rescue 5, opened the garage doors, fired up the lights and sirens, pulled out — and ran over the injured person, police said.
The victim was apparently lying outside the fire station, police said, just 2 to 3 feet from the garage doors.
"I don't think they even saw him," said police spokesman Bill Proffitt.
Proffitt said the victim may have been lying so close to the garage door that he was out of sight of firefighters, who were sitting in the vehicle ready to go when the garage door rolled up.
"They rolled forward and it seems like a piece of the undercarriage struck him," he sad. "They stopped right away and they had a whole bunch of paramedics all giving first aid to this guy."
The St. Petersburg Police Department is investigating the accident. More information will be released later Thursday evening, police said.

Hm .... Maybe they should open the doors before everyone's in the truck?

That might be a good start... you know, at least have someone there that's not going to be on the truck to visually clear the path.

In the town where I grew up a guy would walk out while the garage doors are being lifted up. The man would look in all directions near the fire station. Then he would give the signal for the truck to pull out. This simple procedure would solve many problems. It also would have helped had the one who called 911 told the people on the phone that we are right out side in the drive way.

On the upside, when the guy got run over, he didn't have to wait long for paramedics to arrive.
