This is a recipe that I've come up with by gradually making changes. For now, it's the one that I use with a few of our dogs, because it's high in calories and fat, which helps keep those with a higher metabolism or recovering from being too skinny, sick, etc. recover faster. It's really cheap to buy the ingredients and they'll go a long way for one or two dogs.
The total calories are 481 per serving, but ultimately a serving depends on what size dog you're feeding it to. For ours, I give some Miniature Schnauzers a cup mixed in with their food, but some Chihuahuas get 1/3 cup with theirs. If they're getting too fat, then clearly you'd want to cut back on what you give them.

Boil the water, add all ingredients except the potato flakes and stir.
Then, add the potato flakes, stir, and let cool.
